Legit

This week, I've found the time to watch the entire first season of Legit. It's an FXX sitcom starring Australian comedian Jim Jefferies, former The Daily Show correspondent Dan Bakkedahl, and everyone's favourite emaciated scarecrow-man, DJ Qualls. DJ Qualls plays Billy, who has muscular dystrophy and relies on a wheelchair and support workers.

I've always found DJ Qualls annoying, but Legit is turning things around for me. The guy plays the character with loads of heart, and he's got good comedic timing.

Legit is an outlet for Jefferies' voice and comedy, and he proves himself a good actor. Of course, he was educated in musical theatre at Australia's version of Julliard, so that isn't too much of a surprise.

The show tackles stories and issues that I haven't seen much of on TV. FXX doesn't shy away from deeply-flawed characters, and Legit is no exception. In the first episode, Jefferies takes his disabled friend Qualls to a brothel to lose his virginity. It's based on a true story from Jefferies' life, and the show ventures into territory like this every week without flinching.

It's hilarious. John Ratzenberger shows up a few times as Bakkedahl and Qualls' character's father, and Frau Farbissina from Austin Powers plays their mom. Jefferies is a joke machine in every episode, time to delve into season two, which is about half through airing right now. I hope there will be a third.
